Lando Norris narrowly beat team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the closing stages of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the points lead from Piastri by one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, beat the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before sprint qualifying due at the evening session. The Red Bull star, the sole remaining contender in the points battle, lying with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, ended up in 17th position as his team followed a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to go off, if briefly, when he rotated at Turn Four early in the session. The Japanese slid over the exit kerbs before sliding over the run-off area, and was fortunate to get away with just a light touch of the wall. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the final moments of the practice, turning around through the fast downhill corner approaching the final bend on to the main straight. The veteran ended the session in P19, one place behind teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were well clear of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619secs off Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
