A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
