A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
